About Master of Science in Mathematics

The Master of Science in Mathematics at Friedrich Schiller University Jena is a research-oriented programme taught in English. It offers advanced courses across modern fields of pure and applied mathematics, including algebra, analysis, geometry, numerical analysis and scientific computing, mathematical optimisation, theoretical computer science, stochastics, and financial mathematics. Individual teaching plans and intensive supervision are provided, and the student-to-professor ratio is kept small. Students collect 120 ECTS credits divided among pure mathematics, applied mathematics and stochastics, a minor subject with general key qualifications, and the Master's thesis. Students are free to choose among the available mathematics modules. International students who do not already have at least an A2 CEFR level of German are expected to choose German as a foreign language as their minor, and all required credits for the minor can be earned through German language courses. The programme also includes German language courses for international graduates more broadly. The four-semester programme admits students in both winter and summer semesters and is located at Friedrich Schiller University Jena in Jena, Germany.
