Master of Science in Data Science

The Master of Science in Data Science at Trier University is a multidisciplinary programme taught jointly by lecturers from computer sciences, mathematics, and statistics. It covers the methods and tools for analysing large amounts of data and drawing actionable conclusions, with an emphasis on big data analytics, data modelling, machine learning, and simulation methods. The programme runs over 4 semesters and is open for entry in both the winter and summer semester. The first semester includes propaedeutics courses to align students arriving from different academic backgrounds. Compulsory modules cover topics such as Big Data Analytics, Data and Web Mining, Numerical Optimisation for Data Science, and Statistical Methods of Data Science. Elective specialisation tracks include Algorithmic Optimisation, Applied Statistics, Data and Knowledge Systems, Financial Economics, Geoinformatics, Natural Language Processing, and Simulation Studies. A compulsory research case study gives students direct exposure to scientific methods applied to real-world problems. The programme concludes with a Master's thesis. Double degree options are available in combination with computer sciences, business informatics, applied mathematics, business mathematics, or applied statistics.
