About the Program

The MSc in Earth System Data Science and Remote Sensing at Leipzig University is a four-semester programme addressing global environmental challenges through the combination of Earth system domain knowledge, data science methods, and remote sensing technology. The programme begins in the winter semester and awards 120 ECTS credits in total. The curriculum is structured across several areas: 20 ECTS in remote sensing (multi- and hyperspectral remote sensing, radar, Lidar, reflectance spectroscopy, and field techniques); 20 ECTS in data science (machine learning, artificial intelligence, spatio-temporal data analysis, and geostatistics); 20 ECTS in a chosen field of application such as physical geography and geoecology, biodiversity research, meteorology and climate science, or geology; 10 ECTS in soft skills including scientific writing and research data management; 10 ECTS for a research internship (national or international); 10 ECTS in foundational introductions; and 30 ECTS for the Master's thesis. Domain expertise at Leipzig covers geoecology, biodiversity research, meteorology, and eco-hydrology. Remote sensing expertise is provided through the Remote Sensing Centre for Earth System Research. The programme is based at Leipzig University in Leipzig, Germany.
