About the Program

The MA in American Studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is a four-semester consecutive programme covering cultural and literary scholarship with a focus on American identities, diversity, gender, and mediality. The curriculum spans literary and cultural history, literary and cultural theory, and in-depth study of identity formation, with particular attention to cultural diversity as both a theoretical question and a social reality, including questions of ethnicity and gender. The programme also engages with the history and present formation of media and the consequences of media revolutions in North America. Teaching is primarily in seminar format with an emphasis on discussion. Module assessments include take-home work, term papers, and oral examinations. One module involves MA students tutoring BA students in literary history, and another includes a Transatlantic Student Symposium. The programme opens in the winter semester at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in Berlin.
