Graduates from the BA (Hons) International Development and Languages programme have gone on to roles such as work with government, teaching, and non-government organisations (NGOs). This four-year programme offers a year abroad and the option to study a language from beginner's level (French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese) or post-A level (French, Spanish).

You will have the opportunity to work with not-for-profit organisations in developing countries and learn a second language, such as Arabic, Japanese, German, or British Sign Language (BSL).

Your fluency in a foreign language will be supported by the interpreting suite and language labs, where you can work with video, sound, text and internet sources.

On this programme, you will engage in processes of policy change at international and local levels, campaign on issues of social justice and inequality, and contribute toward the achievement of sustainable development, with modules such as economics, human geography, politics, and international relations.

Field trips, including an optional trip to Uganda, offer on-the-ground experience of community development and protected area management. You will be taught by staff committed to their research, such as Professor Tamsin Bradley, whose work informs schemes to support women across South Asia. Additionally, you will learn from professionals in the sector, including guest lectures from Oxfam and collaborations with NGOs.
