The Master of Science in Infection Biology and Control focuses on the interaction between pathogens and their hosts, examining the mechanisms through which parasites, bacteria, viruses, and fungi invade and cause disease. The programme is specifically centred on the infectious disease burden in sub-Saharan Africa, including major parasitic pathogens and emerging and re-emerging viruses, with emphasis on translational aspects of disease control in the Central African context. Topics include genomics, molecular biology, environmental DNA techniques for vector research, and one-health-related research questions. The four-semester programme is offered exclusively to non-EU citizens and runs every two years, starting in the winter semester. It is a research-oriented consecutive programme leading to a Master of Science degree. Tuition takes place at the campus of the Centre de Recherches Médicales de Lambaréné (CERMEL) in Libreville, Gabon, limiting the cohort to 20 students and enabling small-group work throughout. Each student is paired with a mentor at the start of the programme who supports personal and professional development. The fourth semester is devoted to a six-month Master's thesis, which can be carried out in laboratories in Tübingen, Lambaréné, Berlin, Heidelberg, Libreville, or partner institutes of the Institut Pasteur in Africa. The programme is funded by DAAD within the CAIDERA framework. The programme is offered by the University of Tübingen and based at the CERMEL campus in Libreville, Gabon.
