About MSc Industrial Mathematics and Data Analysis

Industrial mathematics applies modern mathematical methods to problems from science, engineering, and industry, with growing emphasis on the mathematical foundations behind big data analysis. The Master's programme at the University of Bremen covers lectures, seminars, and projects across topics such as machine learning, inverse problems, optimal control, applied statistics, and finite element methods. The four-semester programme accepts students in both winter and summer semesters. The first semester begins with two mandatory lectures on mathematical methods for data analysis and image processing, and on numerical methods for PDE. From there, students choose either data analysis or industrial mathematics as a specialisation, selecting elective courses to build depth in their chosen branch. A minor subject — chosen from electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, geosciences, applied physics, or computer science — runs alongside the mathematical coursework. The centrepiece of the programme is the modelling project, in which student teams tackle real-world problems assigned in collaboration with engineering institutes or companies, using mathematical modelling, analysis, and numerical simulation. The fourth semester is dedicated to the Master's thesis, an individual research project on a current topic. The programme can be followed by a doctoral qualification.
