The PhD in Involuntary Celibates is supervised by Dr Lisa Sugiura, Dr Andy Williams, and Dr Brian Frederick in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice. This research project will focus on incel and other misogynistic online communities, exploring their formation, influence, and motivations. Students will benefit from the supervision team's expertise in this field, as well as the opportunity to engage with an established network of national and international industry and governmental partners.

The research will explore the phenomenon of incels, which originated in 1993 as a support group for individuals feeling lonely and excluded, but has since been appropriated to promote misogyny, hate, and violence. Incels are part of a larger backlash against feminism, often associated with groups like Mens Rights Activists (MRAs), Pick up Artists (PUAs), and Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW).

The project will address a current gap in knowledge regarding what motivates individuals to become incels, and how they are linked to acts of extremism and terrorism. This research aims to develop upon existing work at the University of Portsmouth and contributes to understanding the evolution, formation, and influence of incel communities.
