The School of Computing at the University of Portsmouth is recruiting for a self-funded 3-year full-time or 6-year part-time PhD project that focuses on creating a proof-of-concept framework integrating multimodal communication modalities, such as gestures and visual cues. The project, supervised by Dr Uchenna Ogenyi and Prof Zhaojie Ju, aims to develop machine learning models for real-time perception, data fusion, and adaptive decision-making to enhance human-robot collaboration. Human-centric validation will be conducted, followed by delivering a demonstrable prototype — showcasing enhanced human-robot collaboration through an assembly task in manufacturing — to ensure the interaction methods are natural, intuitive, and effective.
