Introduction

In Moscow, students study on an ivy-covered campus within a supportive and welcoming community. Campus life includes clubs, sports, housing, dining, lectures, performances and showcases. The university also offers online classes through Campus 360 and in-person study locations in Boise, Coeur d’Alene and Idaho Falls, giving students options beyond the Moscow campus.

The University of Idaho is Idaho’s first and only Carnegie R1 research university. Its academic offerings cover more than 200 areas of study, including agriculture, anatomy, fine arts and business administration. Learning is connected to hands-on experience, internships and career pathways, with research activity that includes using artificial intelligence to track wildfire spread and work related to nuclear energy law.

International students are among the applicant groups served through the university’s admissions process, alongside first-year, transfer and graduate students. Financial support includes scholarships, financial aid and low tuition, while housing and dining options are available on campus. Students can build connections with fellow Vandals through campus activities, explore opportunities across Idaho and take part in the university’s statewide footprint.

About the Program

Immersive field research defines the student experience here, taking you from the volcanic landscapes of Iceland and Hawaii to the fossil-rich grounds of Utah and the glaciers of the North. You will spend three weeks in an intensive field school, gaining essential skills in hiking, mapping, and rock identification that translate directly into professional practice. This curriculum is built upon a century-long tradition of geological leadership, offering a unique blend of rigorous scientific inquiry and educational training.

Professional Geological Training

The geological education option is specifically tailored for those who aim to teach or pursue licensure as a Professional Geologist. You will master the technical art of accurate geological mapping, a core competency for the field, while learning to hypothesize, analyze, and synthesize complex earth data. Whether you are uncovering evidence of volcanic activity on Mars or examining local structural formations, you are constantly challenged to see the world through a scientific lens. This program is officially recognized as a STEM field by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, providing international graduates with the potential for extended practical training opportunities in the United States.
