About Master in Geography of Environmental Risks and Human Security

Geography of Environmental Risks and Human Security is a two-year Master of Science programme that provides postgraduate students with the knowledge and analytical tools to understand how environmental risks and natural hazards emerge, how they affect human-nature relations, and how risk is managed in practice. Fields of study span geographical approaches to risk, vulnerability, and resilience; development geography; Earth system science; qualitative and quantitative methods including GIS and remote sensing; social-ecological systems; risk management and governance; and disaster risk reduction and humanitarian response. The programme is taught jointly by lecturers from the Department of Geography at the University of Bonn and researchers from the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security. It consists of eleven on-site modules, a compulsory eight-week internship, and a Master's thesis. The programme opens in the winter semester and is designed for graduates in geography or related fields with coursework distributed across human geography and social sciences, science methodology and empirical research methods, and physical geography and environmental sciences. The programme is based at the University of Bonn in Bonn, Germany.
