Forest Sciences at the University of Freiburg is a Master's programme offering an interdisciplinary education in forest ecosystems and forest management. The curriculum spans forest ecology in Central Europe and worldwide, forest utilisation techniques, conservation and management of animal and plant populations, energetic and material uses of wood, and the ecological, economic, and social dimensions of forestry with a focus on sustainability. Students choose one of three majors. The Classical Forestry major covers wood utilisation, forest protection, and modern forest management. The Forest Ecology Research major develops competencies in investigating forest ecology questions from molecular to landscape scales. The International Forestry major addresses global forest management and the institutions and processes that shape forests internationally. The programme spans four semesters and begins in the winter semester. Annual tuition is 3,000 EUR. Beyond major-specific modules and three compulsory core modules, the programme includes elective courses and a minimum seven-week internship in Germany or abroad, concluding with a Master's thesis.
