Master in Forest and Ecosystem Sciences (FES)

Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

Forest and Ecosystem Sciences (FES) is a research-based Master's programme at the University of Göttingen in which students specialise through one of three study tracks: Ecosystem Analysis and Modelling (EAM), Ecosystem Sciences (ES), or Tropical and International Forestry (TIF). Each track develops scientific knowledge and methods alongside professional competencies in problem solving, teamwork, project management, and interdisciplinary thinking. The two-year programme has a modular structure. Students earn a total of 120 credits, with coursework accounting for 90 credits and the Master's thesis for the remaining 30. Teaching methods range from traditional lectures to smaller group excursions, practical courses, and seminars in which students present and discuss specific topics. The Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology offers laboratories, climate chambers, molecular biology equipment, a greenhouse, and the largest forestry library in Germany. The programme is intended for students interested in careers in international forestry, nature conservation, ecosystem research, or development organisations. The programme starts in the winter semester and is offered at the University of Göttingen in Göttingen, Germany.
