Financial Economics (FINEC) is a four-semester master's programme at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg focused on the financial sector, capital market theory, and the operating principles and regulation of banking and financial markets. The programme takes a strong theoretical and quantitative approach and builds on advanced knowledge in economic theory, econometrics, and quantitative methods for finance. Academic English writing skills at C1 level are treated as a prerequisite for successful participation. The first two semesters cover 45 ECTS of compulsory modules at an advanced level, including Financial Engineering, Financial Institutions, Behavioural Finance, Finance, Stochastic Processes, Foundations for Finance, Microeconomic Analysis, Macroeconomic Analysis, Econometrics, and Company Evaluation. In the second phase, students complete 45 ECTS of elective courses together with a seminar and a scientific project, which requires an academic paper and a presentation. The curriculum culminates in a research-oriented Master's thesis with a final oral defence. Students should expect approximately 20 hours of classroom time and at least 20 hours of independent study per week. On-campus attendance is required.
