English language and literature programs study the English language alongside the literary tradition written in it, from historical periods through contemporary writing. Students read and analyze poetry, drama, fiction and nonfiction, developing skills in close reading, critical analysis and academic writing, while also studying linguistics, literary theory and the historical development of the language. Seminars and discussion-based courses are common, encouraging students to construct and defend interpretive arguments. Beyond literary study, the program strengthens general communication, research and analytical writing abilities that transfer to many professions. Graduates pursue careers in education, publishing, journalism, translation, copywriting and communications, and the strong writing and critical thinking skills developed through the degree are valued broadly across business and public sector roles. Some graduates continue into graduate study in literature or linguistics, while others move directly into fields where clear written and verbal communication is central to the work.
