Master in Economics

The MSc in Economics at the University of Bonn is a quantitative, research-focused programme running over 4 semesters, with intake in the winter semester. It trains students in core economic theory alongside advanced mathematical, statistical, and econometric methods, as well as programming techniques used in economic analysis. The first semester combines a mandatory mathematics course with a choice of three foundational modules spanning microeconomics, macroeconomics, finance, and econometrics, building a strong technical base for the more specialised work that follows. In the second and third semesters, students shape their own academic profile by selecting advanced modules across at least two fields. The available specialisation areas are Microeconomic Theory; Macroeconomics and Public Economics; Management and Applied Microeconomics; Financial Economics; and Econometrics and Statistics, as well as Economic Research. Example modules include Dynamic Methods and Applications, Game Theory, Behavioural Economics, Environmental Economics, Asset Pricing, Banking and Securitisation, and Computational Statistics. A research seminar in the third semester prepares students to develop their own research projects and present findings to peers. The fourth semester is devoted to the Master's thesis. Throughout the programme, students work alongside a cohort drawn from more than 20 countries, and Bonn's research institutes provide further opportunities to gain hands-on experience in economic research.
