Master in Economics (MSE)

The MSE in Economics at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg is a two-year programme divided into four teaching semesters, starting in the winter semester. The first semester consists of six compulsory courses covering the core fields of economics: Mathematics for Economists, Applied Econometrics, Microeconomics, Game Theory, Macroeconomics: Economic Theory, and Macroeconomics: Business Cycles. All compulsory courses are taught in English. In the second and third semesters, students select 12 courses — at least 10 electives from economics and up to two free electives such as language courses — including mandatory participation in at least one seminar. By choosing from five fields of specialisation, students can tailor the programme to their interests. The specialisation areas are Labour Economics, which covers theoretical models and empirical research on labour market policies; Macroeconomics and Finance, which spans monetary policy, international economics, time series econometrics, and macro modelling; Public Economics, focused on tax systems, government expenditure, and regional and development economics; Energy Markets, addressing market design, low-carbon transitions, and climate policy using theoretical and empirical methods; and Health Economics, which examines supply and demand for medical services and health care system design. The fourth semester is reserved for the Master's thesis, written under close supervision of a departmental lecturer. The programme is offered at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg in Nürnberg, Germany.
