Each week you split your time between studio practice sessions, where you experiment with lighting, sound and movement, and creative writing workshops that guide you from ideas to finished pieces. Lectures and seminars introduce theory, while independent study and group projects let you develop scripts, poems or performance concepts. Regular placements and the Professional Skills module give you real-world experience in venues such as the Birmingham Literature Festival.

In the first year you complete a 20-credit Studio Practice module that uses the university’s specialist studios with full lighting, sound and video facilities, and a pair of 10-credit Contemporary Creative Writing modules that explore genre and voice. Throughout the degree you benefit from RSC-led workshops, access to sound-and-video editing suites, and mentorship from award-winning authors including Ruth Gilligan and Luke Kennard.
