The Doctoral Programme in Science at the University of Helsinki trains scientists and experts across seven core discipline areas: atmospheric sciences, chemistry, computer science, geosciences and geography, mathematics and statistics, materials research and nanoscience, and particle physics and universe sciences. Both fundamental and applied research are pursued, including work on climate change, energy, health, technology, and sustainable resource use, using theoretical and experimental methods. The program is multidisciplinary by design, enabling doctoral researchers to engage with perspectives from diverse fields and to collaborate within an international scientific community. Partners include other faculties at the University of Helsinki, other universities, national and international research organisations, and businesses. Studies consist of courses and seminars that support the dissertation research, which is primarily conducted in research groups with individual guidance. Graduates are prepared for roles in academia, research institutes, industry, government agencies, and international organisations. The program runs for four years and starts in September 2026. The program is based at the University of Helsinki in Helsinki, Finland.
