The programme spans four years. In the first year you complete a suite of coursework subjects that provide research methodology, literature review and advanced topics, while also pursuing a minor project. The degree can be taken full-time or part-time, with an expected workload of around 48 hours per week in full-time mode. Years two to four are devoted to your doctoral thesis, allowing you to develop and present a significant contribution to engineering knowledge.

What sets this course apart is the integrated coursework component within a PhD, giving you both the depth of a doctorate and the breadth of master-level study. The coursework is delivered on campus at the Wollongong Innovation Campus and includes discipline-specific modules that complement your research training, preparing you for academic or industry research roles. You choose individual subjects from the faculty’s master-by-coursework options, tailoring the content to your research interests.
