Master in Digital Ecology and Biosurveillance

Digital Ecology and Biosurveillance examines how data-driven technologies transform the monitoring and management of ecosystems. It asks how models, remote sensing, and molecular tools can reveal patterns of biodiversity, detect invasive species, and support climate-change mitigation. The programme places these questions in a practical framework, using real-world datasets and laboratory work. Students study environmental modelling with GIS, R and Python, apply machine-learning techniques to geospatial analyses, and design IoT-based smart-sensing networks. Molecular ecology and eDNA analysis provide DNA-based insights into aquatic and terrestrial communities, while biodiversity assessment teaches morphotaxonomic and genetic identification skills. A research methods module prepares a dissertation that integrates these approaches, readying graduates for roles in environmental consultancy, governmental monitoring programmes, or research institutes.
