The programme runs over three years, each year building on the knowledge and skills gained previously. In the first year you study the core physics modules and an introduction to astrophysics, developing a solid foundation in mechanics, electromagnetism, optics and the mathematical tools required. The second year deepens your understanding of modern physics while adding specialised astrophysics topics such as stellar evolution and cosmology, and includes laboratory work. In the final year you integrate the two disciplines through advanced modules, a major project or a teaching placement, and you may also take a sandwich year abroad or in industry.

A distinctive feature of this course is the access to the university’s teaching observatory, which houses more than twenty telescopes and provides hands-on experience of observational astronomy as part of the Applied and Computational Physics module.
