Advanced Biobased and Bioinspired Materials is a bachelor's degree program managed by the Faculty of Chemistry at Lodz University of Technology in Łódź, Poland, taught exclusively in English and running for 4 years with yearly tuition of 8000.0 PLN. The interdisciplinary program includes selected topics from chemistry, biology, medicine, physics, and technical sciences. Its objective is to teach the design, production, and analysis of functional materials intended for medical and biological purposes, along with their applications and methods of use. The curriculum also covers technological processes based on bioresources, and teaching relies on methods built around solving real-life problems and group work. Core course units include an introduction to laboratory work; biochemistry and biophysics; the synthesis and physicochemical properties of polymer components; modern techniques for synthesizing and analyzing biomaterials and nanostructures; bioresources, bio-based materials, life cycle, and biodegradation; nanomaterials; tuning the applicability of biobased materials; polymer composites that mimic nature; emerging technologies inspired by nature; supramolecular self-organization inspired by nature; and fundamentals of business. Every student pursuing the degree completes at least one semester abroad as part of the program, in the 6th semester, referred to as the Mobility Semester. As a field, biobased and bioinspired materials science sits between materials engineering, chemistry, and biology, focused on developing materials that draw on biological structures or renewable biological resources rather than purely synthetic ones. Graduates are positioned for roles in materials research and development, medical device and biomaterials companies, sustainable materials industries, and further study at the master's level in materials science, chemistry, or a related engineering discipline.
