With more than 25 research groups, the thesis component provides extensive hands-on experience in a highly active research community. The programme begins each September and is normally completed in five years or longer, depending on research progress.

It is intended for candidates who already hold a relevant master’s degree and wish to develop core scientific skills while exploring a broad range of biological research. You will receive training in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication, and you will be encouraged to pursue your own research interests as they evolve.

Graduates move into roles such as university lecturers, government scientists, industry researchers, museum curators, and conservation consultants, working in areas like marine ecology, genetics, cell biology, and behavioural ecology.
