Bachelor in BA (Hons) American Studies 2026/27

American Studies explores the history, literature and culture of the United States, examining how race, gender, civil liberties and foreign policy have shaped the nation and its global influence. The programme investigates key historical events, major literary works, film, music and contemporary political debates, giving students tools to link past developments with present challenges.

Graduates move into teaching, journalism, the Civil Service, law, the creative and cultural sectors, NGOs, public relations and marketing. Their ability to research, analyse and communicate complex ideas is valued across a wide range of employers and further study opportunities.

Students spend their third year at an American university, with options to study in Canada, Australia, New Zealand or Hong Kong. The department hosts the Arthur Miller Institute and partners with the American Library, providing access to speakers, events and Congress-to-Campus visits that enrich the academic experience.
