From week one you will be on a real archaeological excavation, spending 14 weeks each year in the field to investigate human remains, Palaeolithic stone tools, Anglo-Saxon jewellery and the latest ancient DNA evidence. Lectures and tutorials are combined with hands-on work, so you develop critical analysis, communication and team-working skills while uncovering artefacts.

The programme suits students who have achieved A-levels or equivalent in archaeology, history, anthropology or a related discipline and who are keen to combine scientific enquiry with cultural interpretation. It builds on your existing knowledge, offering compulsory modules such as The Archaeology of Britain, Bones, Bodies and Burial and a sequence of Field Archaeology units, while optional units let you explore forensic anthropology, geomatics or world archaeology.

Four years of taught modules, annual placements and a final independent research project lead to an MSci qualification. In the fourth year you transition to a supervisory role, managing a small team on a real project and completing a major research dissertation that may involve your own field or laboratory work.
