Bachelor in Applied Mathematics

Applied Mathematics at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences trains students to work at the interface of mathematics, computer science, and information technology. Modern mathematics underpins a wide range of current technology — digital communication, satellite navigation, e-commerce, medical technology, consumer electronics, web search, and social network analysis all depend on mathematical knowledge and methods. This programme approaches mathematics as an independent technology in its own right, characterised by an algorithmic and technology-driven approach with direct industrial relevance. The Bachelor's programme runs over 6 semesters and is structured around a strong core of mathematical compulsory modules: Analysis I through III, Linear Algebra I and II, Algebra and Number Theory, Computer Algebra, Graphs and Networks, Numerical Mathematics, Probability and Statistics, Computational Statistics, and Machine Learning and Pattern Recognition. Students also complete Introduction to Programming with Python, Theoretical Computer Science, and a Studium Generale module covering academic skills and basic German. A three-month internship is integrated in the sixth semester, and the programme concludes with a Bachelor's thesis. Elective selection modules are available in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, computer science, and engineering. Graduates are prepared for professional roles in mathematics and its applications, with the problem-solving skills, interdisciplinary capacity, and ability to engage in lifelong learning that complex, computer-supported mathematical work demands.
