About the Program

The Applied Marine Biology Course (AMB) is a four-year bachelor's program at Tohoku University in Miyagi, Japan, taught in English, with entry each October. The course focuses on applied marine biology, covering the biology of marine organisms and ecosystems alongside the applied side of the field, such as aquaculture, fisheries science, and marine resource management. Undergraduate students in a program of this kind typically move from foundational biology and chemistry coursework in the early years toward specialized marine science coursework and laboratory or field-based research as they progress. Tohoku University describes its UREX-Tohoku Project, titled "The Journey Starts Here," as a plan to build a research ecosystem by supporting early and mid-career researchers and attracting researchers from other countries. The project is funded through the government's Universities for International Research Excellence initiative; the university states it was the first in Japan selected for the initiative and that it will receive 15.4 billion JPY, or roughly 100 million USD, in the current fiscal year, with about 10 billion JPY expected annually over the following 25 years. Graduates of an applied marine biology program commonly pursue careers in fisheries science, aquaculture, marine conservation, or environmental research, and some continue on to graduate study in marine or biological sciences. Entry requires mathematics and two science subjects among physics, chemistry, and biology, along with an English proficiency score from TOEFL or IELTS. Because the course is taught in English over four years, international students can complete a full undergraduate degree in marine biology while based in Miyagi, with pre-arrival admission procedures available to streamline the move to Japan.
