Master in Applied IT Security

Applied IT Security is a part-time, fully online Master's programme delivered jointly by the Faculty of Computer Science at Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the isits AG International School of IT Security. It was developed by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, the Horst Görtz Institute for IT Security (HGI) at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, and the isits AG. The HGI is one of the largest university IT security research institutions in Europe, with over 200 academics affiliated with it. Running over 6 semesters — with entry in both the winter and summer semester starting 15 October and 15 April respectively — the programme builds a foundation in cryptography, discrete mathematics, network security, system security, and software engineering, then offers a broad range of elective modules drawn partly from industry partnerships. Engineering principles are applied to real problems, including cases taken from consultations with industry, to develop both technical depth and problem-solving capacity. All modules are delivered online; some elective modules include optional voluntary attendance of one to two days. Written exams are taken in person and are organised globally and individually for international students; oral exams are conducted either in Bochum or online via video conference. The programme suits working professionals in IT, information security, electrical engineering, or related fields who want to earn a Master's degree while continuing employment. Applicants need at least one year of professional experience in IT or IT security alongside their first degree. The programme is offered in both English and German versions and is based at Ruhr-Universität Bochum in Bochum.
