The programme is deeply rooted in the history of the site on which the university stands: the former Shingwauk Indian Residential School. Through the Shingwauk Project, the university is committed to the research, preservation, and display of residential school history, actively pursuing Chief Shingwauk’s vision of “sharing, healing, and learning.” With a high percentage of Anishinaabe students and the consistent presence of community Elders, the learning environment is one of cross-cultural synthesis, where traditional Anishinaabe knowledge is honoured alongside academic inquiry.
