About PhD Agricultural Sciences

The PhD in Agricultural Sciences is a thesis-based programme that can be completed in five years or more on a full-time, in-person basis. It is the first doctoral degree in agricultural sciences offered in Atlantic Canada and brings together research in five broad areas: Agribusiness and Rural Studies, Bioresources and Environmental Sciences, Animal Science, Plant Science and Agricultural Engineering. Students work under a faculty supervisor and develop an original dissertation that contributes to food systems, resource management or agricultural technology. The campus hosts an on-site working farm, nearly 1,000 acres of research fields, gardens and greenhouses, providing direct access to experimental plots and advanced laboratories. A limited number of competitive scholarships are available to support high-achieving candidates. Graduates are prepared for careers in academia, private industry or government, where they can apply their expertise in precision agriculture, bio-resource management, animal nutrition or plant genetics.
