About the Program

The Master's programme in World Heritage Studies (WHS) at Brandenburg University of Technology was established in 1999 and was the first graduate programme in the world to build its curriculum around the UNESCO Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. The on-campus version is taught full-time in Cottbus and focuses on the managerial skills needed to identify, preserve, manage, and present cultural and natural heritage sites. The programme draws on humanities, architecture, conservation, ecology, management, tourism, marketing, public relations, and related disciplines to address the links between culture and nature, tangible and intangible heritage values, and conservation and sustainable development. The curriculum is organised into four interdisciplinary study areas: Humanities and Social Sciences; Art, Architecture and Conservation; Natural Heritage and Cultural Landscapes; and Management. Students also complete two applied study projects and a Master's thesis. The recommended duration is four semesters, beginning in the winter semester. The programme has a partnership with Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia. The top five students admitted to the on-campus programme may study one semester abroad in Melbourne and receive full DAAD funding, and are awarded two degrees upon successful completion. Brandenburg University of Technology delivers this programme at its campus in Cottbus, Germany.
