Veterinary medicine examines animal health, disease prevention and the links between animal, human and environmental wellbeing. The BVMS programme integrates these themes, offering training that moves from basic animal handling to complex clinical diagnosis and management.

It suits applicants who have achieved strong results in science subjects – typically A-level Chemistry and a second science such as Biology, Physics or Mathematics – and who have completed at least two weeks of veterinary work experience across both large and small animal practices. Candidates should be prepared for early clinical exposure, simulation training and the demands of a five-year full-time course.

Over five years students progress through a spiral curriculum that blends clinical skills, communication, business and leadership training, with a fully immersive final year in ATU’s hospitals and partner practices. Emphasis on rural, remote and resource-limited settings, as well as One Health and sustainability, prepares graduates for diverse roles in Ireland and abroad.
