Introduction

Temple University sits in North Philadelphia, an hour and a half from New York and two from Washington. It enrols about 37,000 students, 1,200 of them international, and holds R1 status for research activity. Tuition is set by college rather than by programme, so what you pay depends on whether you enter Fox for business, Tyler for art and architecture, or the College of Liberal Arts.

About the Program

This undergraduate certificate in Theater Education lets students outside the Theater major pair drama training with another field of study, aimed at those who want to teach or lead drama programs in K-12 settings, including future teachers of other subjects like math or science who want an added skill set. The five-course, 15-credit sequence satisfies Pennsylvania's Drama/Theater teaching endorsement and is not open to Theater BA or BFA students.

About the University

Temple was founded in 1884 as a night school for working Philadelphians, and the idea has stuck: it is a large public research university that still admits broadly. You can choose from 158 bachelor's, 170 master's and 41 doctoral programmes listed here, across seventeen schools and colleges on a single walkable campus.

How tuition works

International students pay the full-time annual out-of-state rate for their college, and the spread is wide. Liberal Arts, Education and Social Work sit at $36,600 a year; the Fox School of Business is $45,768 and Tyler's Fine Arts degree $45,720. Engineering, Pharmacy, Public Health and the Boyer College of Music and Dance fall between. Graduate programmes are priced separately, many of them per credit hour.

Philadelphia

The main campus is on the Broad Street subway line, fifteen minutes from Center City. Temple runs its own campuses in Tokyo and Rome, so a semester abroad does not mean leaving the university.
