The Sustainability Co-creation Programme, known as SCOPE, is a four-year bachelor's degree at Hosei University in Tokyo, Japan, taught in English with admission each September. Hosei University was founded in 1880 and counts among Japan's historic universities, now spanning 15 undergraduate faculties and 38 departments, 15 graduate schools, and 2 professional graduate schools, all accredited by the Japanese government. The university has held Top Global University Project status since 2014, a government initiative funding 37 universities chosen from around 800 nationwide, and it provides financial support to its students. A sustainability-focused undergraduate program typically draws on environmental science, economics, policy, and community development, examining how businesses, governments, and communities work together on sustainability challenges. Coursework often includes environmental studies, sustainable development theory, and collaborative or co-creation projects, where students work alongside stakeholders such as local organizations or companies on real sustainability problems rather than studying the subject purely in the classroom. Over four years, students build both academic grounding and applied project experience. Graduates from sustainability-oriented degrees pursue careers in environmental consulting, corporate sustainability departments, non-governmental organizations, and public policy roles, as well as further study in environmental or development fields.
