SAGA UNIVERSITY

PhD in Strategic International Postgraduate Program (SIPOP)

Saga, Japan Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The Strategic International Postgraduate Program, known as SIPOP, is a three-year doctoral degree at Saga University, taught in English with intake each October in the city of Saga. Saga University was formed in 2003 through the merger of the former Saga University, founded in 1949, and Saga Medical University, founded in 1976, and it was incorporated as a National University Corporation in 2004. Today it is a comprehensive university made up of six faculties and seven graduate schools, enrolling around 5,800 undergraduate students and 790 graduate students, and it has produced more than 60,000 graduates since its founding. At the doctoral level, SIPOP centers on independent, supervised research carried out over three years, with candidates working with faculty advisors to design a research project and complete a dissertation. As an international postgraduate track, the program is built around cross-disciplinary and internationally oriented research themes, drawing students into Saga University's graduate schools while connecting them with cohorts of other international doctoral candidates. Doctoral study of this kind typically combines coursework and seminars with laboratory or field research, academic writing, and presentation of findings at conferences or in peer-reviewed publications. Because the program is delivered in English, it is structured to admit international researchers without a prior Japanese-language requirement, while still situating them inside a Japanese national university with an established graduate research infrastructure. Graduates of programs like SIPOP are typically prepared for academic careers, senior research positions, and roles in government agencies, international organizations, and industry that require advanced, internationally oriented research training.
