Introduction

Iona University brings together more than 4,000 students in a diverse community shaped by the values of justice, peace and service. The university began in 1940 and follows the educational tradition of the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers. Its alumni network includes 55,000 graduates around the world. Iona became a university in 2022 as its academic programs expanded.

Students can choose from 45 undergraduate majors, more than 35 minors, graduate degrees and advanced certificates. Academic areas include liberal arts, science, business administration, nursing and health sciences, communication, education, psychology, criminal justice and computer science. The university also offers graduate study in areas such as business analytics, occupational therapy, social work, mental health counseling and sports communication. Artificial intelligence is incorporated into learning to support innovation, creativity and critical thinking. Small classes and engaged professors are central to the academic experience.

Iona’s 45-acre New Rochelle campus and 28-acre Bronxville campus are four miles apart and connected by car or the Gael Express shuttle. New Rochelle offers modern facilities, while Bronxville has historic character and a downtown with shops, cafés and restaurants. Both campuses are a short train ride from New York City. Students can also explore Iona’s campus in Westport, Ireland, where classes take place at historic Westport House on a 400-acre estate. Campus life includes athletics, student clubs, volunteering and performances.

About the Program

Students work inside the ESPN production truck to call games, operate cameras, and produce live broadcasts. They gain hands-on experience in video editing, studio production, and social media content creation. Courses include live game reporting, podcast production, and sports blogging. The program integrates real-world media projects with academic study in a hybrid evening format.

The program requires 36 credits, including a three-credit thesis project preparation course and a three-credit thesis course. Students complete required coursework in sports media and a supervised video documentary project.

Graduates work as sports anchors, digital content creators, podcaster, media specialists, and video producers at organizations like ESPN, NBC Sports, MLB Network, and Barstool Sports.

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. GRE scores are not required. A writing or video sample is optional. The application is submitted through Iona’s Graduate Application Portal.

The programme totals about 36 credit hours. Hybrid learning with evening classes, typically completed in two years. For international students, tuition is around the median for US programmes. The institution admits about 91% of applicants.
