This program prepares candidates for a teaching license in secondary education (grades 6-12). It requires completing a major in an approved field of specialization, such as English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, or Social Science, alongside specific education coursework and clinical experiences. The program focuses on pedagogical knowledge and practical skills for teaching in diverse secondary school settings.

Focus areas include English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics designation), Social Science (History designation), World Languages (French, or Spanish).

The curriculum includes 37-42 credits of education coursework, a minimum of 100 hours of clinical experiences, and 9-10 credits for student teaching. Specific requirements vary based on the chosen subject matter major.

Graduates are eligible for initial secondary teaching licenses in Illinois and may earn additional middle-grade endorsements.

Admission to WheTEP is required. Prerequisites for student teaching include specific education courses, a teaching methods course in the major, a minimum GPA of 2.8 in the major, professional education courses, and cumulatively. Candidates must also pass an Illinois Licensure Testing System content-area test, clear a background check, and receive a departmental recommendation.
