Leipzig University

Master in Physics

Leipzig, Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The MSc programme in Physics at Leipzig University deepens and broadens knowledge in modern areas of experimental and theoretical physics, building on a BSc in physics. Students can specialise in areas including biophysics, quantum technologies, soft and active matter, theoretical condensed matter, mathematical physics, or applied physics and materials. Research resources are provided by the Peter Debye Institute for Soft Matter Physics, the Felix Bloch Institute for Solid State Physics, the Institute of Theoretical Physics, and the external Leibniz Institute of Surface Modification. The programme runs over two years, divided into a first phase of coursework and a second phase of research. In the first phase, students choose between courses in advanced condensed matter physics and soft matter physics, advance their theoretical knowledge through quantum mechanics and statistical physics, and complete further specialisation modules and seminars covering topics from the department's research groups. The research phase culminates in the preparation and defence of a Master's thesis. The programme is research-oriented, and the MSc degree corresponds to the level of a German Diplom, qualifying graduates for doctoral study. More than 1,500 students from around 40 countries study at the Department of Physics and Earth Sciences. The programme admits students for both winter and summer semesters. Leipzig University is located in Leipzig, Germany, and has offered physics instruction since its founding in 1409.
