Master in Music Therapy (MA)

The Music Therapy Master's programme at SRH University in Heidelberg trains students in the therapeutic application of music for the promotion of emotional, cognitive, social, and physical integration and recovery. The programme is grounded in the Evidence-Based Practice Model and offers a comprehensive therapy education drawing on psychodynamic and depth psychology models, cognitive-behavioural approaches, and systemic, humanistic, and arts-therapies approaches. Fundamental musical and clinical competencies are taught through manualised therapy concepts and practised in small groups. Running over 4 semesters and beginning in the winter semester, the programme covers 15 modules including therapy sciences, music therapy theory and practice, psychology and psychotherapy, clinical psychology, neurology, quantitative research methods, arts therapies, assessment, and professional ethics. Students also complete a clinical placement and an advanced placement in either a clinical or research setting. The degree concludes with a Master's thesis. Music therapy is applied across a wide range of clinical and community contexts covered in the programme, including psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine, neurology, geriatrics, palliative and hospice care, paediatrics, intensive medicine, and prevention and education settings. An on-campus music therapy outpatient centre and clinical internships with national and international partner facilities provide practical training closely tied to everyday practice. A psychophysiology laboratory and collaborative research projects support students' introduction to scientific work. The programme is delivered in Heidelberg, Germany.
