Master in Meteorology

Leipzig, Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The Master's programme in Meteorology at Leipzig University is a research-oriented course that provides in-depth training in the theoretical and experimental working methods of the discipline. Students study theoretical meteorology including dynamics, radiative transfer, and remote sensing theory; applied meteorology including synoptics, weather discussion, and experimental methods; and experimental and numerical practical courses. An elective area allows students to pursue a wider meteorological or interdisciplinary focus. The programme runs for 4 semesters and is available for entry in both winter and summer semesters. The curriculum is structured around a compulsory area for intensive study of basic meteorology, a compulsory elective area in general, experimental, and theoretical meteorology organised by the scientific working groups of the Leipzig Institute for Meteorology, and a research area with intensive training in a scientific subject. The programme concludes with a Master's thesis in the fourth semester. Research at the Institute is conducted in eight working groups covering topics including atmospheric radiation, clouds and climate, remote sensing, Arctic climate, aerosols, and precipitation processes. The Institute collaborates with TROPOS, UFZ, and partners in international projects. Graduates are equipped to contribute to meteorological research at an international level. The programme is offered at Leipzig University in Leipzig, Germany.
