About the Program

The MA Sociology — International Track at Bielefeld University is a four-semester English-language programme with a research orientation. Primary focus areas include Social Structure and Social Inequality, Sociology and Anthropology of the Global World, Sociological Theory, and Sociological Methods. Students may also select modules from other areas of the MA Sociology programme in which English-language courses are offered on an irregular basis, covering topics such as political sociology, organisational sociology, sociology of gender, media sociology, and sociology of work and economics. The programme requires a high level of academic writing competence. Students write six term papers of 20 to 30 pages each, as well as a Master's thesis of approximately 70 pages. The curriculum includes an introductory module covering theory and methods, six thematic modules delivered through seminars, and at least one student research project module. Students select a study profile consisting either of three modules from the same thematic area or a general profile combining modules in Sociological Theory and Sociological Methods.
