PhD in Kuroshio Science Program

Kochi, Japan Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The Kuroshio Science Program is a three-year doctoral degree taught in English at Kochi University, based in Kochi, Japan, with admission each April and October. Kochi University is a national university in Kochi Prefecture, in the southern part of Shikoku, made up of six faculties, seven master's courses, and three doctoral courses, and it promotes research under the idea of moving 'from Regionality to Globality and from Globality to Regionality,' with attention to fields such as ocean science, disaster risk management, and regional studies. This doctoral program takes its name from the Kuroshio Current, the major warm ocean current that flows along Japan's Pacific coast and shapes climate, fisheries, and marine ecosystems across a wide part of East Asia. Research within the program is interdisciplinary, drawing on oceanography, marine biology, environmental science, and regional geoscience to study how the Kuroshio Current system influences coastal ecosystems, weather patterns, and the communities that depend on them. Doctoral candidates typically work closely with a faculty supervisor on an original research project over three years, culminating in a dissertation, while also engaging with fieldwork opportunities along Kochi's Pacific coastline. Because instruction is in English, the program is open to an international group of researchers interested in ocean and regional science in the Asia-Pacific context. Kochi's location directly on the Pacific coast gives students practical access to the marine environments central to the program's research focus. Graduates typically move into research positions at universities, oceanographic institutes, government agencies, or environmental organizations, or continue in academic research roles connected to marine and regional science.
