Ritsumeikan University

Bachelor in Information Systems Science and Engineering Course

Kyoto, Japan Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

Ritsumeikan University offers the Information Systems Science and Engineering Course as a four-year bachelor's degree taught in English, with intake each April on its Osaka campus. Ritsumeikan is a comprehensive private university in western Japan with more than a hundred years of history, selected to lead the internationalization of Japanese higher education under the government-funded Top Global University Project, and it enrolls around 36,000 students across four campuses in Kyoto, Shiga, and Osaka. This course focuses on the design, development, and analysis of information systems, covering areas such as programming, computer architecture, databases, networks, algorithms, and software engineering. Students typically build a foundation in mathematics and computer science before moving into more specialized coursework in systems design, data analysis, and emerging areas of information technology, often supplemented by laboratory work and project-based assignments that mirror practices used in industry. As the program progresses, many students take part in research or development projects supervised by faculty, working individually or in teams to design and evaluate information systems for real-world problems. Because instruction is delivered in English, the program admits students who have not yet studied in Japanese, while still placing them within a Japanese engineering faculty and campus community for four years. Graduates of information systems and engineering programs are typically prepared for careers in software development, systems engineering, data analysis, and information technology consulting, as well as for further graduate study in computer science or information systems. The Osaka campus setting connects students to one of Japan's major commercial and technology centers.
