About Master in Game Development and Research (Master of Arts)

Game Development and Research is an English-language, interdisciplinary Master of Arts programme at Technische Hochschule Köln aimed at media professionals who work across design, film, visual arts, writing, and related fields including computer science. The programme focuses on the development of non-linear audiovisual content and on generating new aesthetic and economic directions for the digital content industry. The programme balances theoretical modules with independent project work. Theoretical components develop academic competencies in methodology, research, experimentation, interpretation, and criticism, as well as verbal, written, visual, and audiovisual communication. During project work, students receive individual support to develop original solutions for nonlinear audiovisual formats, working within defined budgets and interdisciplinary teams. Thematic areas include game design, visual aesthetics, game economics and entrepreneurship, interactive storytelling, analogue and digital prototyping, and video game and media studies. The programme is structured around a compact attendance schedule, with required presence on Mondays and Wednesday evenings, allowing students to maintain part-time employment alongside their studies. It is offered at Technische Hochschule Köln in Köln, Germany.
