PhD in Fusion Science Program (three-year doctoral program)

The Fusion Science Program, offered as a three-year doctoral program at The Graduate University for Advanced Studies, SOKENDAI, is conducted in English, with admission each April and October, based at the university's Gifu location. SOKENDAI was established in 1988 to train first-class researchers through doctoral course programs that make use of the research environment of Japan's Inter-University Research Institutes. This three-year track covers the same field as the university's five-year Fusion Science Program, spanning plasma physics, fusion reactor design, and materials science relevant to fusion energy, but follows a shorter timeline generally suited to applicants entering with prior graduate-level preparation in physics or a related field. Gifu hosts major Japanese fusion research facilities, giving doctoral candidates direct access to plasma confinement and fusion experiment infrastructure. Students move relatively quickly from specialized coursework into independent dissertation research, working on topics such as plasma confinement and stability, fusion plasma heating and diagnostics, and materials behavior under fusion reactor conditions. Graduates of this doctoral track commonly pursue research scientist positions at national fusion laboratories, academic roles at universities, technical positions at energy research organizations, and postdoctoral research building on their specialization. The Gifu location supports close collaboration with scientists actively working on plasma and fusion experiments at national facilities. With admission offered twice each year, in April and October, applicants have flexibility in choosing a start date for the three-year doctoral program. Because instruction is delivered in English, international students can pursue advanced fusion science research at a Japanese national facility without first needing to be fluent in Japanese.
