Master in European Master's in Global Studies

Leipzig, Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The European Master's in Global Studies is a four-semester research-based master's programme that draws on history, the social sciences, cultural and area studies, and economics to examine processes of global connectedness. Rather than treating globalisation as a fixed empirical object, the programme approaches it as a set of political, economic, social, and cultural projects for managing transnational and transcontinental relations. Students are expected to engage with multiple analytical frameworks, practice comparative methods, and reflect critically on how knowledge about the world is produced. Learning targets include working across disciplinary perspectives, applying concepts from various theoretical traditions, comparing socio-political configurations, and developing awareness of the role of academic culture in shaping knowledge. The programme takes postcolonial critiques of disciplinary boundaries seriously and organises its curriculum accordingly. Students study at a minimum of two partner universities within the consortium, with the option of spending an additional semester at a non-European partner. The final semester is devoted to the master's thesis. The programme begins in the winter semester each year. The programme is offered by Leipzig University in Leipzig, Germany.
