Hollins University traces its campus history to 1842, with architecture that dates to its founding. Martha Louisa “Matty” Cocke, the founder’s daughter, later became the first woman to head a college in Virginia and served as Hollins’ president from 1901 to 1933. Traditions such as Opening Convocation, Tinker Day, and the Passing of the Robes connect current students with generations of Hollins women. The undergraduate program offers 29 majors within a liberal arts education shaped by discussion, discourse, and faculty guidance. Students can pursue research, including funded undergraduate opportunities and the Annual Science Seminar, as well as internships, leadership development, and study abroad in locations across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Graduate options include coeducational MFA and education-related MA programs. Hollins’ 475-acre campus lies at the foot of Tinker Mountain, with scenic hills, historic buildings, residence life, clubs, organizations, and community traditions. Roanoke offers access to Blue Ridge Mountain views and downtown life. International students apply through the Common Application, can submit their application without an application fee, and receive guidance from an admission counselor after applying.
