Students complete at least one practicum in local elementary schools, applying classroom learning in real teaching settings. They study child development, literacy, mathematics instruction, and culturally responsive teaching methods. Courses include psychology of learning, differentiated instruction, and sheltered English instruction. Students build a professional portfolio and develop classroom management strategies through hands-on experiences.

Focus areas include Child Growth and Development, Differentiation & Instruction, Children's Literature, Sheltered English Instruction, Foundations of STEM, U.S. History.

The concentration requires a total of 120 credits, with coursework distributed across general education, education core, and concentration-specific classes. Students complete a practicum and student teaching as part of the program requirements.

Graduates pursue roles as general studies teachers in grades 1-6, reading or math tutors, and school administrators.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent. A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required. Submission of official transcripts and a personal statement is required.

The programme totals about 120 credit hours. On campus, full-time, four years. For international students, tuition is well above the median for US programmes. The institution admits about 74% of applicants.

The campus community is home to the Merrimack Warriors and Division I athletics, with school spirit forming part of everyday campus life. Merrimack is located in North Andover, Massachusetts, and its wider setting includes nearby Andover, where Merrimack on Main is becoming a home for creative arts, design and architecture in a historic building.
