About the Program

The Double MA Degree in Sociology at the University of Bamberg is a 4-semester programme beginning in the winter semester. Students graduate with a degree from the University of Bamberg alongside a degree from one of three partner universities: the University of Trento (Sociology and Social Research), the University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona (Sociology and Demography), or Tilburg University (Sociology). The three partnership tracks differ in structure and emphasis. In the Trento programme, students may spend their first year in either Trento or Bamberg; the second year is spent at the other university. First-year study at either location covers Sociological Theory, Research Design, Data Collection, and quantitative and qualitative methods of data analysis. The second year offers a focus on either Education, Labour, Inequality or Communication and Internet. In the Barcelona track, students spend the first year in Bamberg and the second year at Pompeu Fabra. Core first-year modules include Sociological Theory, Research Design, and Empirical Research Methods, followed by second-year courses in socio-demographic analysis, social inequalities, family, gender, migration, and social policy. The programme uses STATA for quantitative data analysis. In the Tilburg track, the two universities have agreed on mutual recognition of courses, allowing students to structure their two years across Bamberg (courses in Sociological Theory, Research Design, Advanced Methods of Data Acquisition, and electives) and Tilburg (courses including Social Capital, Social Policy and Social Risks, Social Structure of Western Societies, and Theory of Research). All three tracks are based at the University of Bamberg in Bamberg, Germany, for at least part of the degree.
